There sure are some nice things about using smoking wood chips the next time you are cooking. Some of our customers live in apartments, are elderly or just don't like large pieces of smoking wood. This is where smoking wood chips come in. With just 1/4 cup of smoking wood chips, you can turn your gas grill and BBQ smoker into a great BBQ smoking machine.

The first thing you do is buy a 1 lb bag of specialty smoking wood chips from Upchurch Cooking Firewood with the free shipping option.  You are only going to need to use 1/4 cup of smoking wood chips or a 1/3 cup at the most.  Soak these chips for 30 minutes in tap water. If you are experienced with smoking wood chips, then you may elect to soaking in apple juice or pineapple juice.  If this is your first time up smoking wood chips, soak in tap or bottled water. You need to experience the smoking wood by itself and analyze the qualities of the smoking wood.

A basic way to use your smoking wood chips is to put them in some aluminum foil. After you do that poke some holes in the aluminum foil so the sweet smoke can escape. When you are using a regular BBQ smoker, you can then put the wrapped aluminum foil on top your charcoal. If you are using a BBQ smoking wood base, you will place the aluminum foil on your base wood after it has burned down in your firebox and it is nice and hot.  Since you poked holes in your aluminum foil it will begin to smoke after awhile. The soaking of the smoking wood chips allows it not to burn up. If you do not soak your smoking wood chips, the chips will eventually catch on fire and they will not last as long.

If you have tried smoking wood chips in the past, it may be a great time for you to try out some smoking wood pellets. Pellets are compressed fruit wood sawdust. They take the best of the fruit woods and chip them down and turn them into sawdust. These are a compressed with a very strong machine. The great thing about smoking wood pellets is they really burn a long time. They are 100% fruit smoking wood unless otherwise stated. Sometimes they are mixed with Oak wood because Oak smoking wood can increase their burn time. Another plus of smoking wood chips and smoking wood pellets is they are very easy to order. You can bring some really great smoking wood options via shipping that would otherwise not be available in your local area.  Some types of smoking wood chips we have had available at Upchurch Cooking Firewood is orange wood, lemon wood and sassafras wood. These types of trees do not grow anywhere close to where our shop is. But because of smoking wood chips and smoking wood pellets, we can make them available to you!

Hi Mike in Baltimore -

Smoking whole wild hogs is fun but it’s dependent on choosing the right smoking wood chips. First, you may want to stay away from the more aromatic smoking wood chips like texas mesquite and southern hickory smoking wood. They may be a little too intense for a long smoke with a wild hog. Think about the lighter nut woods and fruit smoking wood chips. Pecan would be a good overall smoking wood chip and it would be your dominate smoking wood. Smoking wood chips to add to it and would do a great job would be Apple chips and Peach chips. Enjoy smoking your whole hog, Mike!

Hi Jared,

We have a couple different options when it comes to the longer burning smoking wood and smoking wood ships for sale. You may want to choose the smoking wood chunks instead of the smoking wood chips. The chips are great when they are soaked in water for 30 minutes and then they are able to release the sweet smoke into your BBQ smoker. I unique option is to soak the smoking wood chunks in water and that will help it smoke more and burn slower.
How long do you soak the smoking wood chunks? That is up to you but I have customers that soak them overnight. Then they get a good and hot bed of charcoal going. Placing the soaked chunks really help the BBQ smoker fill with smoke. This is a way you can conserve your firewood if you want to. Some competition bbq smokers do not do it this way because there is too much smoke created by the soaking of the smoking wood logs.
Coming back to your question of a long burning smoking wood… A longer burning firewood is Apricot wood if it is available. Another long burning smoking wood is Hickory wood. These are two smoking wood options if you are looking for a longer smoking time. Great question!
