Pinion wood is not for cooking because it is a sappy pine that will not be suitable for smoking and cooking. Another part of pinyon wood is you want it to get as much smoke as possible. Some people soak their pinion chunks in water for 30 minutes before burning. You will need to get a fire burning first and then put the wet pinon wood on top. Don't try to start your fire with wet pinion since that will make it difficult. In the summertime when all the bugs and mosquitoes and bugs are out in full force, pinion wood does repel them. All the bugs and mosquitoes hate the smell of pinyon wood but we all love it. What a great arrangement that is!
