If you are going to be cooking a variety of foods like grilling vegetables, smoking meats, grilling lobster then there is one smoking wood that can be a good fit for all of them. That is Pecan firewood. Although pecan is a nut wood it doesn't have a strong aroma like Hickory wood and mesquite wood. Pecan has a light aroma and it won't overpower your foods at all. Actually, pecan smoking wood and cooking wood can bring out the natural flavors in everything you are cooking.

One thing to consider when you are picking out the correct cooking wood for your food is to determine how long your food is going to be on the grill or BBQ smoker. The are meats and burgers that are only going to be on cooking for a very short amount of time. When a cooked food is on the grill for short times it is a good time to use a more aromatic cooking wood to give it a little more flavor. Fajitas, for example work really well with hickory wood or mesquite wood. The short time on the grill can handle a more aromatic wood to give it what it needs with the natural flavoring. Burgers are another good example for uses with more aromatic woods. When cooking burgers, I really like the outcome of using hickory wood.

On your longer smokes in your smoker you will want to tone it down with a less aromatic smoking wood. Smoking pork ribs or even prime rib you are going to do better with a fruit wood. Some various fruit woods that are great to use are apricot, persimmon or some cooking wood pellets.  Using one of our cooking wood pellets are going to give you the most options because we have such a large selection.

Be cautious about apple wood being the best because that is a opinionated outlook. Apple wood is not the best smoking wood available. It is just what the internet says and that can't be trusted. Finding the best wood is a fun journey you will discover on your own but don't take what the internet says as truth.

Is there a difference between firewood, cooking wood and smoking wood?  Firewood is often related to what type of wood you use in your winter fireplace. Firewood comes in all different forms and there is all different types in the United States.  Cooking wood and smoking wood are virtually the same thing. Often a chef at a restaurant will call it cooking wood. Often the competition smokers and backyard smokers refer to this type of wood as smoking wood. Cooking wood and smoking wood is often cut a certain length preferably 16" and often firewood can be cut anywhere from 12" in wood stoves and up to 24" to large fireplaces.  So, whether you are looking for cooking wood, smoking wood or firewood for sale we can met your needs in all areas.

Tom,
I am in Cleveland. Where can I get a good amount of wood for my new smoker. Don’t want to just use the chunks from home depot anymore!

Tom,

There are several options when it comes to finding one firewood for sale that can be used year round. Sometimes its a smoking wood that is versatile, sometimes not. Our Santa Fe Pinion wood is excellent year round for chimineas, outdoor fireplaces, indoor fireplaces and such. But pinion wood is not a cooking wood or smoking wood. If you’d choose one wood for your bbq smoker, fireplaces and to use in a chiminea it would be hickory wood or pecan wood. Everyone has their preference but using hickory wood or pecan wood is a pretty good thing. Let me know if you’d like some more help! Thanks #growokc

There are benefits of both the fruit smoking woods and the nut smoking woods. The fruit cooking woods seem to be for delicate cooking. Especially if you are smoking fish and lobster. A nut smoking wood like Hickory has other benefits cause it can really pack a good punch when it comes to flavoring. We have many customers that reallylike nut woods like Mesquite wood and Hickory wood. Then some customers really enjoy the fruit smoking woods. I would 100% consider what you are smoking and go from there. If you have any questions, please ask. Thank you

From our perspective, there is not a difference between smoking wood and cooking wood. But there is a difference between “firewood” from cooking wood and smoking wood. Firewood is mostly your winter indoor fireplace firewood. You wouldn’t normally use cooking wood and smoking wood in your indoor winter fireplace but you can. Smoking wood is not suppose to burn fast it is suppose to “smoke.” And most firewood you’d never use for cooking. For example, you could burn Elm tree firewood in your fireplace if need be but it would not ever be used for cooking and smoking. Fireplace firewood you want to burn well and create a raging fire for heat. Not with cooking wood and smoking wood. Hope that helps, Tom

Matt,

The quick and simple answer for grilling vegetables would be to use Pecan wood and consider a smoking wood pellet. It’s the smoking and cooking wood I’ve used the most with vegetables. Also, there are some other really good options like fruit woods. Since you are probably cooking some other things with your vegetables, you may want one wood to do it all really well. That’s why I’d choose Pecan and maybe add a good cooking pellet. Choose one of our fruit pellets to pair with the pecan wood because a combination can really enhance everything. Thanks and great question.
